A Non-Surgical Treatment for Scoliosis

The Schroth Method is a physical therapy approach developed in Europe. It is a nonsurgical option for scoliosis treatment. Schroth Method uses exercises customized for each patient by a PT to return the curved spine to a more natural position. The goal of Schroth Method exercises is to de-rotate, elongate and stabilize the spine in a three-dimensional plane. It may be used in combination with bracing for optimal outcomes. Schroth Method Therapy is recommended as an option to treat scoliosis when:

  • Cobb angle <10, with a family history or with any clinical signs present: Welcome at any age for 1-2 visits for education and basic training
  • Cobb angle of 15-55 degrees: Treatment course will vary based on treatment plan and severity for:
    • Girls ages 10 years of age or older
    • Boys ages 12 years of age or older
    • Adults with scoliosis or kyphosis without pain
  • Cobb angles of 60 degrees should work with their orthopedic medical team to develop an appropriate plan

  • 15-20 visits over 4-6 months, each session 60-90 minutes
  • 1st week: 3-4 visits
  • 2nd week: 2-3 visits
  • Weeks 3-6: 2 visits
  • Weeks 7-10+ : 1 visit a week

  • 8-12 visits over 2-4 weeks
  • Follow up session within 8-10 weeks after completion as able to ensure proper technique with home exercises and progress
